老K鱼汤 (Lau K Fish Soup)

Acting on a tip-off from a colleague, we found ourselves in front of this relatively nondescript stall amongst the rockstars that make up the institution that is Hong Lim Food Centre. The queue length was sizable despite the relative lack of awards or storied history, which most other stalls seemed to display as standard. Considering the kind of items that Hong Lim is well-regarded for (mee pok, char kway teow, curry chicken noodles and lor mee come to mind), those who are being dragged here by their lunch kaki might find some respite in stalls like these.

This is perhaps the first time I have come across a fried fish bee hoon providing both chilli sauce and cut chillies, as well as golden fried egg whites as soup garnish. The surprises don't stop there, either, as the fish was fresh and delicately flavoured with soya sauce, probably one of the best I have tasted in my admittedly limited experience.

It's such a pity that they stumble on a very important item though: the soup. I would have happily given a full score had I not encountered such a watery soup lacking in flavour. This would also explain why most people ordering from the stall were ordering the tom yam soup base, as it packed a very big punch to go along with everything else already described.

Verdict:
3/4 - that one oso can
